City prepares for annual clean up effort

Michael Butler

Keeping our community clean is an everyday job. Once day per year, the community comes together to clean this land in which we live.

It's "Team Up to Clean Up" week in Tallassee, in conjunction with Earth Day. Last year, the Tallassee Times featured a story on Eleanor Stagnor, who makes it her purpose to pick up rubbish on daily walks in East Tallassee.

"I was shocked to see the litter in Alabama," Stagnor said, recalling when she moved to the state from Arkansas. "There’s a sign that says "Alabama the Beautiful," and there’s litter all around it.  Tallassee’s terrible in some spots."

The awareness of keeping Alabama clean is hoped to be sustained, not just for "Clean Up Week."

Those wishing to have clean up teams may sign up at the Tallassee Chamber of Commerce. Neighborhood and business teams are welcome. Call 334-283-5151.

Stone's Throw Landfill and Advanced Disposal are partnering with the Chamber of Commerce to sponsor the event. Advanced is offering a roll off container for discarding non-hazardous materials and team litter debris at City Hall on Saturday, April 24 from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Hazardous materials may be dropped off at City Hall this week until Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. each day.

Parker Tire and Service Center will accept used oil, tire and batteries all week from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Electronic Recycling may be dropped off at the Tallassee Recreation Center on Thursday, April 23 from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

In the words of Stagnor, "I don’t like to see litter. I wish the young kids wouldn't do it.  I'd like to see them love their community. Kids need to be taught, but they do what their parents do." That's good advice from a wise woman.
