SMS principal named

By Michael Butler

Southside Middle School has a new principal. Micah Cook will be taking over the position.

"We actually interviewed him for the elementary school principal and considered hiring him," superintedent Wade Shipman said. "When things fell into place as they have, we interviewed him again. We actually interviewed a couple of people again. That's the benefit of having that search and getting to see some people that you'd like to see again."

Cook has been serving as principal at Talladega's C.L. Salter Elementary since last year. He has twelve years of principal experience, four at the middle school level.

"I am an educator," Cook wrote in his core beliefs. "It is my business to teach children. All of my decisions are made through the lens of promoting learning opportunities for children."

Shuffling within the system began with Dr. Jose Reyes departure as Tallassee Elementary School prinicipal for the superintendent's opening at Scottsboro City Schools. Shanika Beacher took Reyes place creating the opening for assistant principal. Bruce Dean is making the move from Southside principal to the elementary school. Shipman is optimistic that all the positions are in place for successful tenures.

"Hopefully this is a win-win situation for everybody," Shipman said. "We're moving forward with new leadership. Personnel decisions can make or break a school system. Having good people do a good job is priceless. You can't put enough money or emphasis on it."

Cook is looking forward to the opportunity.

"Learning should be fun," he said. "I will work together with all stakehoders to find creative and innovative ways to engage students and maker learning fun."
