Youth wrestlers win title again

Three in a row! The Tallassee youth wrestling program, Talisi Wrestling Club, claimed its third straight team title at the USAW Alabama Championship in Birmingham on Saturday with nine individual champions.

"We put 17 in the finals," head coach Brent Tennyson said. "Going into the finals, it was neck and neck. In the end, they pulled it off."

Tallassee edged Warrior and Ironclad in team points for the overall championship.

"If you just win off points is 3. A major is 5. A pin is 6," said Tennyson. "I told everyone of them, pin to win in the finals. We had to get pins all day."

Tallassee's individual champions are; Landyn Woodall, Granger Barrett, Barker Davis, Jace Nabors, Land Bell, Alli Faith Smith, Sara Whatt, Jude Rogers and Aidan Cockrell.

For Bell, it was his seventh individual title.

"Land won rookie his first year and from there on out he's won a championship every year," Tennyson noted. "Mason Nelson finished second this year and has wrestled seven years. Jude Rogers has wrestled eight years. Going into their seventh grade year, they've already wrestled almost twice as long as some kids do in their whole high school career. These kids have a lot of matches under their belt."

Now comes a break for the title holders.

"As a team, we don't go year-round. A lot of these clubs we go against go year-round, but our kids excel in other sports. For the level we wrestle, for the time we have to do it, in my opinion it's impressive."
