Girls excited to get full season

By Georgia Anne Butler and Michael Butler

When the 2020 softball season ended, Tallassee was 15-1 and ranked No. 1 in the state. However, the opportunity to play for a state championship was taken away by COVID-19.

The 2021 season began with a purpose, to finish what was unfinished from the year prior. The Tigers are nearing that finish line with the regular season now complete.

Lumpkin

"We won a lot of games but the season didn’t last long," junior Avary Lumpkin said of last year. "This year I’m just excited to have the opportunity to play."

Lumpkin, a junior, is among 13 girls on the No. 2 ranked team in the Class 5A Alabama Sports Writers Association poll. She has already made her college choice to continue playing softball at Marion Military Institute next year.

Four other Tigers are taking their talents to the next level as well, seniors Lexi Love and Ella Thrash and juniors Chloe Baynes and Alexis Walls. Love will play at Chattanooga State Community College. Thrash is headed to Central Alabama Community College. Walls is also committed to CACC. Baynes plans to attend AUM.

Tallassee (28-11-4) ended regular season action with wins over Central Phenix City 9-1 on Friday and Beulah 9-3 on Saturday in the rescheduled Purple and Gold Tournament at Southside.

Davidson

"You can expect us to come to practice everyday and work hard and get better," junior Chloe Davidson said. "We are preparing for the many opportunities ahead."

The post-season begins this week as Tallassee hosts the area tournament. The Tigers were a perfect 6-0 in area play during the regular season.

Game one will be against Beauregard on Thursday at 1.
