Blue Devils knock off Rebels

By Suzannah Solomon Wilson

The Reeltown Rebels fell to the Notasulga Blue Devils for the first time in almost a decade when a strong Blue Devil team out rushed and out scored the Rebels in the season opener.

Notasulga scored early but Reeltown was able to hold them to just two touchdowns in the first half, and the Blue Devils held a tight 13-6 lead at halftime.

The Blue Devils gained 104 yards rushing on 21 carries during the first half while the Rebels could muster up just 29 yards on 14 carries.  Reeltown QB Jamon Matthews completed two of three passes for 66 yards while Notasulga completed all four passes for 90 yards.

Reeltown’s sole score was an 18 yard pass from Matthews to Cade Giddens on third and goal early in the second quarter.

Both teams played a scoreless third quarter.  The blue Devils scored early in the final quarter and again late in the game to seal the deal.

Totals for the game included 71 yards on 32 carries for the Rebels, and six completed passes out of 17 attempts for 83 yards.

This was the career opener for Reeltown head coach Matt Johnson, who replaced retired head coach Jackie L. O’Neal.

Reeltown travels to Dadeville Thursday night to face another long time rival.
Kick off is at 7 p.m.
