Logan Lee with TD catch in overtime

One for the ages - Reeltown wins in OT

By Suzannah Solomon Wilson

The Reeltown Rebels are headed to the ‘ship.

The Rebels avenged a 2010 34-7 loss to the Leroy Bears in the state championship game with a 29-28 victory in overtime to win the semi-finals in Class 2A and reign as champions of the southern end of the state.  Reeltown faces 2018 champions the Fyffe Red Devils on Friday, Dec. 6 in Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn.

Tied at 21-all at the end of regulation play, Reeltown won the toss and deferred to Leroy.  The Bears were quick to put points on the board, and followed with a PAT to lead 28-21.

Rebel QB Iverson Hooks connected with Logan Lee on a 12-yard pass to score, and a holding call on the Bears during the two-point conversion gave the Rebels a second chance at victory.  And they did not disappoint their fans.  Hooks handed the ball to senior Cameron Faison, and that was all she wrote.  The Rebels had redeemed themselves.

The Bears put points on the board first, early in the second quarter on a 14-yard run by Kade Moseley.  Reeltown’s first score was a 1-yard run by Hooks.  Connor Moore’s kick tied the game and it stood at 7-7 at halftime.

Reeltown’s Tre Tre Hughley ran in from the six on a 4th down and three to put the Rebels ahead of the Bears, and Moore’s kick gave Reeltown a 14-7 lead.  This was the only score in the third quarter.

Leroy gave the Rebels quite a scare, scoring two unanswered touchdowns to take a 21-14 lead.  Their last TD was made at the end of the game with less than two minutes to go.  But the Rebels shocked the Bears with a two yard run by Cameron Faison and Moore’s kick tied the game.

Fyffe beat Luverne 21-19 in the 2018 2A championship game and has only met the Rebels once, in the playoffs in 2014.  The Red Devils beat the Rebels 34-0 in that game.

Kickoff is at 3 p.m. on Friday.
