Super 7 next for Rebels

By Michael Butler

With their thrilling overtime victory win in front of a standing room crowd at Nix-Webster-O’Neal Stadium behind them, Reeltown now sets its sights on the state championship.

The Rebels (13-1) scored a 29-28 victory over Leroy on Friday to advance to the program’s ninth state title game. It will be the first appearance under fourth-year head coach Matt Johnson, who was a player on the 2001 state championship squad coached by Jackie O’Neal.

“It’s the same feeling,” Johnson said of the role as player and coach going to the championship. “There’s a lot that’s different as a coach, but there’s a lot that’s the same. Friday night lights – the feeling is no different.”

Reeltown will have the tall order of knocking off the defending state champs in Fyffe (14-0). The Red Devils have won 29 straight games and the last two Class 2A state titles. This will be their fifth state championship game appearance in six years. The program has three state rings.

Reeltown will be vying for their fourth state crown. The last came in 2009.

“I’m blessed with this group of young men. It’s hard to put into words. It’s indescribable,” Johnson added.

Fyffe and Reeltown have played just one time previously with Fyffe coming out on top 34-0 in the second round of the 2014 playoffs.

Reeltown will be the designated home team for Friday’s game at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
