Boys drop season opener at Hoover

By Michael Butler

The season started with some hoopla, no pun intended. The Tallassee boys basketball or hoops team scheduled a headliner game with the state's largest school in Hoover. The Tigers got behind early and were unable to overcome a double-digit first-half deficit in a 77-53 loss.

Hoover came in as Class 7A's No. 4 team. The Tigers opened the season ranked No. 8 in 5A.

The Bucs took the early lead and were up 48-30 at the half in the battle of ranked teams. Tallassee was outrebounded 39-31 and committed 19 turnovers.

"You won't win many games getting outrebounded and turning the ball over 19 times," THS head coach Keiven Mixson said. "We have some challenges to overcome this season, but I have no doubt we can overcome them."

Jamicah Humphery led Tallassee with 23 points. Jalyn Daniels scored 14.

"We have to be committed to playing with extreme intensity on defense and we didn't," Mixson added. "It will be great to see how we respond in the next few weeks."

Mixson said more games could be scheduled before the next game on paper on Dec. 1 vs. Loachapoka. Hoover has shown interest in returning a game to Tallassee. The highly anticipated game with Calhoun and Alabama signee JD Davison is slated for Dec. 8 in Tallassee.

Season tickets are being sold this week at the high school for $80 per booklet. Tickets will be sold on-line through GoFan during the season. Seating capacity at Stumberg Gym will be limited to 220 per game.
