Tigers "pounded" at Valley, homecoming this week

By Michael Butler

Tallassee returned to the playing field in Valley after a two-week break.  A close game at the half turned into a comfortable 34-12 win for the homestanding Rams, who remained undefeated in Class 5A/Region 2 play.

The loss dropped Tallassee to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the region.

“That two weeks didn’t have anything to do with it,” said Tallassee head coach Mike Battles. “The better team won.”

A turnover by the Tigers on a muffed punt late in the first quarter led to Valley’s first score on the next play – a 30 yard touchdown pass.

But Tallassee answered with a scoring drive of its own. A 44-yard pass completion from Tyler Ellis to Truck Griffin was the big play. THS converted a 4th and 13 pass from Marciano Smith to Jalyn Daniels for the TD.

Valley added a score with just :34 remaining in the half for a 13-6 lead.

Marciano Smith suffered an injury just before the intermission and was sidelined on crutches for the remainder of the evening.

Valley took the opening drive of the second half for a touchdown to add to their lead.  They went up 27-6 early in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers got to within two scores again on a Zavion Carr run from one yard out with just over four minutes remaining, but Valley put away any thoughts of a Tiger comeback with a covered onside kick attempt and TD for the win.

Tallassee was outgained 329-241. Ellis went 10-19 for 134 yards. Griffin had two receptions for 61 yards. Smith rushed for 40 yards on nine carries.

“Their guys are big. They just pounded us in the second half,” Battles added. “We can still make the playoffs. That just puts us behind the eight ball. We got some folks injured. We got to get them healed.”

Homecoming is this week in Tallassee. The opponent is different than the Rehobeth of last year that was 0-10. The Rebels are 5-1 overall and are currently second in the region standings.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. 1300 WTLS/106.5 FM will have live coverage of the game beginning at 6 simulcast on Tallassee Times TV through YouTube, Spectrum Channel 97 and the TuneIn app.
