Tigers drop first game of season

By Gary Buchanan

Tallassee went on the road for a tough region test against Munford Friday night. The Lions jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they defeated the Tigers 19-6. The loss was Tallassee’s first of the season and dropped their record to 4-1 overall, 2-1 in the region.

Carson Smith took the opening kickoff back 85 yards for a touchdown. After a Tallassee possession went three and out, Smith scored again on a 32-yard run. The missed PAT left the score 13-0 a little over five minutes into the game.

Tallassee’s offense came to life and Markevious Matthews scored on a 22-yard run. The extra point was missed. The halftime score was 13-6 Munford.

After the opening scores, Tallassee’s defense found ways to keep Munford out of the end zone. A second quarter drive was stopped when Casey Baynes recovered a fumble on the one-yard line. Later, in the second half, Trent Cochran-Gill caused a fumble at the goal line. The ball went out of the endzone and gave Tallassee possession at their own 20. Unfortunately, the offense was not able to capitalize on those turnovers.

“We battled back after the kickoff return. They’ve got a good team. If we don’t put ourselves in a hole early, the game might’ve turned out different,” said Coach Mike Battles.

Munford’s X’Zavian Britt scored the final points of the game. His three yard touchdown run came with 24 seconds left on the clock.

Cochran-Gill was credited with nine tackles and one forced fumble during the game. His effort on defense and offense earned him the Spectrum Player of the Game honor.
