Tigers win road opener at Neal

By Gary Buchanan

Tallassee’s first ever trip to East Brewton was a successful one. The Tigers defeated W. S. Neal 28-13. The victory improved Tallassee to 2-0 on the season.

W. S. Neal struck first with a 20-yard pass for a touchdown on a fourth down play. Tallassee answered later in the second quarter when Casey Baynes scored on a 24-yard run. The Eagles looked to take the lead when they drove to the four-yard line with a little more than two minutes left in the half. On a first and goal play, Tavarious Griffin stripped the ball loose and recovered the fumble. The halftime score remained tied at seven.

The second half saw the Tigers take control of the game. Trent Cochran-Gill scored on a 37-yard run in the third quarter. Baynes added two scores in the fourth quarter on runs of 10 and 22 yards.

Baynes finished the night with three completions on three pass attempts for 71 yards. He also rushed 16 times for 141 yards and three touchdowns. His performance earned him the Spectrum Player of the Game honors.

“Brewton’s a tough place to win no matter which side of the creek you’re on,” said Coach Mike Battles. “We weren’t ready to play tonight and that’s on me. We were fortunate to get a turnover right before the half. Our kids dug down deep again and we got the victory.”

Tallassee travels to Roanoke Friday night to open region play against defending state champion Handley. The Tigers were the only team to defeat Handley during their championship run last year.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. 1300 WTLS/106.5 FM will broadcast live with an airtime of 6:00. Audio will be simulcast on TuneIn Radio and Spectrum Cable TV Channel 97. Video is available on Tallassee Times TV.
