Tigers pick up first win, Daniels shines again

By Michael Butler

Tallassee's Jalyn Daniels had yet another career night as the Tigers recorded their first win of the 2020 season in Eclectic over Elmore County on Friday 49-21.

"There's nothing that can cure problems like a win," head coach Mike Battles said. "Elmore County came out ready to play. It was nip and tuck for a little bit."

Daniels, who sat for most of the fourth quarter, ended the evening with 349 yards on 20 carries and five touchdowns. The single-game record of 392 yards was set by Brandon Baynes in 2014 vs. Talladega.

With Tallassee in front 21-14 at halftime, Daniels had 101 yards on 15 rushes. He scored on his first two touches of the second half. The first came after Ziggy Holloway's interception to end a Panthers' threat at the Tigers' one.

"That was 99 and 2/3 yards," Battles said. "You can't run one any farther that that. He had a lot of great runs and a lot of great blocking."

Cade Everson scored his first varsity touchdown on Friday

Daniels' second half totals: 5 runs for 248 yards. He had touchdown runs of 5, 27, 99, 89 and 37 yards. Zavion Carr scored Tallassee's first TD on a 26-yard run on the game's opening drive. Ninth grader Cade Everson scored on a 32-yard quarterback keeper.

The Tigers piled up 524 total yards, 511 on the ground, averaging 13.4 yards per play.

"We were able to get a lot of young kids in and get them some good quality reps," Battles added. "It's nothing like a win to get everything squared away. You've got to get that first one so you can get that second one. I'm happy for all of them."

Battles is 8-1 in games vs. Elmore County while at Tallassee. Tallassee is 1-3 overall and 1-1 in Class 5A/Region 4. The Panthers fell to 1-4 and 0-3 in the region.

The Tigers travel to Pike Road next Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Patriots (4-0) are ranked No. 8 in Class 5A and are tops in 5A in scoring average at 54 per game. A limited number of tickets will be available through Go Fan.
