Hammonds talks about summer plans

By Michael Butler

Tallassee High School head baseball coach Kyle Hammonds will get the first look at his new team in competition this week, weather permitting. The Tigers have a series of Tuesday games scheduled throughout June.

Tallassee will host the first slate of games with four different teams participating on Tuesday, June 8. All games will have a two-hour time limit.

"We're going to have concessions," Hammonds said. "Say your prayers that it doesn't rain."

Benjamin Russell will host games the next two Tuesdays, June 15 and 22.

"This seems to be a great group of kids," Hammonds said of the 30 combined players than make up the varsity and junior varsity squads. "My biggest thing is just getting around them and getting to know them on a personal level. That's a big thing in building team chemistry.

"I'm really not concerned about JV or varsity. We're just going to split them up and let one group play one game and the other group play the other game. I don't care if you're in ninth grade or whatever. One day you may have to play on the varsity. Quite a few kids had vacation planned this week. We're going to be down some kids. We'll have about 12 on each team."

There are 16 players on the Southside Middle School team, who Hammonds hopes to also schedule some summer action.

"I've been talking to Coach (John) Stonaker," Hammonds said. "We're trying to find at least one day where they can do something. It's a jam-packed summer. Babe Ruth picked up the district tournament at the end of June and the state tournament is in July."
