Tigers open FCA with tie

By Michael Butler

"There's no tying in baseball!" We all remember Tom Hanks' line from "A League of Their Own." Yes it was crying, but tying also applies when it comes to Tallassee baseball history - until this week.

Monday's 2-2 stalemate after seven innings against Montgomery Academy in the Jason Armstrong FCA Tournament at Montgomery's Riverwalk Stadium was a first according to the Tallassee High School Record Book.

The archived history of THS Baseball has season records dating back to 1975. In those 46 seasons on file, there were no ties.

"(It) probably is a first," Tallassee head coach Adam Clayton said. "The tourney had a two-hour limit. We played a full seven."

The Tigers trailed 2-0 early but scored a pair of runs in the latter innings to salvage a tie. Tallassee is 0-5-1 on the season.

Ironically, the Tallassee softball team also finished a game in a tie with Smiths Station 1-1 on Feb. 20. It too was in tournament play. Even with the International Tiebreak in place, there was no winner after seven innings.

"There hasn't been one since I've been here - not that I know of," head coach Pat Love said of the tie. "I think that's the first time."

For the baseball program, a streak of over 1,000 games with a winner and a loser has come to an end.

Season records are listed for Tallassee baseball seasons from 1975-2021. Tallassee's record in those games now stands at 796-310-1.
