Rivals face off on cold Monday

Staff Report

It was a good old fashioned pitchers' duel as frigid weather returned to Southside Field. Elmore County beat Tallassee 2-0 as Austin Downey hurled a one-hitter.

Downey went the distance in striking out 9 and walking 2 over 7 innings. The only Tallassee hit came off the bat of Reese Graham breaking up the no-no with one out in the Tigers' last at-bat.

Beau Baker pitched well for Tallassee but took the loss. Baker went 5 innings allowing one earned run. He struck out 2, walked 1 and scattered 7 hits. Devin Lee worked 2/3 of relief. Jackson Gantt pitch 1 2/3 with one run given up.

Downey helped his own cause at the plate with a pair of singles. Taylor Henderson also had two hits for the Panthers.

Tallassee (3-5) plays at Wetumpka on Tuesday, March 5. The Tigers travel to Clanton to play Chilton County in a doubleheader on Friday and play at Lee in Montgomery next Monday.
