Two Tallassee teams play on

By Michael Butler

Five Tallassee all-star teams battled in state championship tournaments last weekend. Two will now move on to the next level.

Tallassee's 6u girls hoisted their second blue trophy at the state level in Montgomery last week. The Hit Squad, winners of the 6u NSA state title in Millbrook just two weeks earlier, claimed the 6u Dixie Youth title in the Capital City last Tuesday with an 18-17 win against Montgomery American.

"The Dixie Youth was a little more exciting because there were more teams and it was Montgomery, which is kind of our rival," coach Jamie Patterson said. "These little girls are real ballers. Most of them have been playing together since they were four."

Tallassee's 14U all-stars will be representing Alabama this weekend in Texas

The Tallassee 14u Babe Ruth all-stars were the runners-up to host team Semmes last week, but got some good news from the opposing team.

"The coaches came over and said, 'We've been there and done that five years in a row,'" coach Craig Vaught said. "I rallied all the parents up and said I'm going to allow y'all to make the decision, not me; however, it would be a great opportunity and I firmly believe we can compete at this level. The parents all said, 'Hey, we're in!'"

The 14u team will be traveling to Lake Jackson, Texas with Tallassee opening vs. Hot Springs, Ark. on Friday, July 22 at 2:30 p.m. There are eight teams in the double elimination tournament. The winner will advance to the national tournament in Massachusetts.

Tallassee's 7/8 DYB All-Stars

Tallassee's other Babe Ruth teams recorded victories at the state level as well.

The Tallassee Dixie Youth 7/8 all-stars were one of the top four teams among 23 at the state championships in Wetumpka, falling short 4-3 in the semifinal to eventual state champion South Bibb.

The 6u Dixie Girls World Series double elimination bracket includes nine teams in Perry, Ga. Opening ceremonies are on Friday, July 29. The Tallassee girls play Virginia on Saturday, July 30.

"We've played 14 different teams. We haven't lost a game yet," said Patterson. "There's a pretty good chance we can go the whole way."
