Will there be changes with upcoming elections?

Staff Report

2020 is not just an election year for presidential and senate races, it is also a municipal election year.

The primary for mayor, city council and school board seats is scheduled for Aug. 25. How could this year's race change with the coronavirus pandemic?

"Some people are thinking about running," Tallassee mayor Johnny Hammock said. "I've had people contact me about it. I tell them qualification is from July 7-21. It's $25 for school board and council. It's $50 if you want to run for mayor."

Hammock has already announced his plans to seek re-election for a second term.

"You have to fill out paperwork and they do a background check," he said. "I've had some people say, 'I'm thinking about running, but I'm going to wait until all this coronavirus stuff is over.' How are you going to campaign knocking on doors?"

The mayor has done some preliminary advertising although he knows of no competition.

"I read a book in college called, "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People." That book changed my life. It talks about being proactive, not reactive. I'm not going to wait until somebody pops up. I'm going to do what I can. I'm going to run like I've got somebody running against me. I've got my foot on the gas. If somebody comes out, I'm going to throw it in overdrive."

When August rolls around, precautions such as social distancing at the polls might be expected. The question of a delayed election date is still uncertain. Stay tuned.
