Population dips slightly

The numbers are in from the 2020 Census and Tallassee's population count is almost unchanged. The population is 4,763, a drop of about one percent from the 2010 population of 4,819.

This marks the third straight time that the city's population has dropped. The numbers have hovered around 5,000 in post-World War II census counts. Just one time has Tallassee exceeded that number with a population of 5,112 in 1990.

Since 1960, Tallassee's population has decreased every decade except for the 1990 Census.

Millbrook remains the largest city in Elmore County by population at 16,564. Alexander City is the most populated in Tallapoosa County at 14,843.

Elmore County's population is 87,977. Tallapoosa County's population is 41,311. Alabama's population is 5,024,279.

Huntsville is now the largest city in Alabama with a population of 215,006. Birmingham's city population is 200,733. Montgomery has 200,603 residents. Mobile's population is 187,041.

The smallest incorporated town is Oak Hill with a population of 14. In the 2010 Census, Oak Hill was the state's second smallest behind McMullen, but the town had a boom rising from 10 residents to 32 in the past decade.
